HEllskinner

The first Hellskinner was made from the approximately 22 cm long piece of steel from which I made Intruder blades. I couldn’t let such an excellent raw material go to waste, and it was a good opportunity to design a new knife, which has been on my mind for a long time, so I put it to work.

The task was to design a field knife like a crushing hunting knife with an 8mm thick drop point blade,  and with curved, very comfortable handle. The blade of the prototype was 11 cm long, but the need for a larger knife with a longer blade soon arose. This is how the Hellskinner got its final shape with a 14cm long blade. This knife is a solid camp/survival knife, I recommend it to those who like to use such a robust but comfortable American-style knife suitable for serious work. And why is its name Hellskinner? Because it’s like Hellboy’s EDC knife :-).

The Hellskinner’s blade is made of sleipner tool steel, 14cm long, 4cm wide and 8mm thick. The point of the knife is convex, the main section of the edge is straight, then runs with a strong curve to the tip.

The blade is FFG full flat grind, with convex cutting edge. This edge construction fits well with the thick blade, which cuts well, is easy to sharpen, maintain, and can also be used for more demanding tasks. The hardness of the blade is 59-60HRC.

The handle is a classic shape. The handle guard is formed from the blade. The back of the grip is strongly curved, the lower contour widens in the middle, and the pointer and little finger have a pronounced concavity. The end of the handle is sufficiently wide, so it can be held securely even when chopping and cutting wood, it has a bird’s head shape. There is no relief in the grip, so the knife is as strong as possible, and the center of gravity is also in the right place. The grip panel can be made of G11/FR4 or micarta. Viewed from above, the grip is the well-proven “dog bone” shape, with curved grinding in the panels on the front and back on both sides, so the grip is equally thick at the front, center and back, and the two edges of the palm can easily fit into the depressions. This handle shape is very stable and fits this massive knife well.

The sheath is a pouch style, made of thick cowhide with inner blade guide plates and a double layer of edge protection. I also put a D ring on it, so the knife can be worn on the belt by hanging it with an extension or a carabiner.
